Wedding dresses!
The canny folk at ASDA spotted a gap in the market when they introduced George-branded wedding dresses into supermarkets back on Valentine’s Day, 2006.
Sporting a price tag of £60, the outfit was well-received. Which you might think unsurprising, considering this offered a saving of hundreds upon hundreds of pounds on the average price of a wedding dress in the UK.
But, at the time, it must have been a commercial risk – would brides-to-be feel comfortable, sauntering down the aisle in such sensibly-budgeted attire?
You bet they would – the first batch of dresses sold out within hours. And a whole new market sector eventually followed, as the big fast-fashion retailers – such as ASOS – took note.
So, for a bonus question: which rival supermarket launched the £22 wedding dress in 2023?

Nope – not one of those discounters, but our old friends at Sainsbury’s. £22 would get you a sleeveless, pleated wedding dress from their TU range. Plus a few bonus Nectar points on top, for the honeymoon.
