They shoot… they score! It’s Flip Football!

The two-player card game for young footy fanatics.

Flip Football has been around for a while, but has slipped under the radar a bit for those not in the know.

We’ve not written about it here; it’s not been advertised on TV, and you might be forgiven for missing those compact packets of cards amidst all the overwhelming razzmatazz of the big toy stores.

Nevertheless, it’s been a hit for a few years now, both in the UK and in Europe – so what are you missing out on, and who would enjoy Flip Football?

The first thing to appreciate is that Flip Football is the opposite of most football card games. So we’re talking action over stats. Think ‘snap’ rather than ‘trumps’.

Lay a card as the attacker to move upfield. Lay another to dribble further forward. Lay another to get within sight of goal. Lay ano… BOOM! The defender’s got a block in; your move’s in pieces; now it’s you on the back foot as you scramble to thwart a counterattack.

(Older readers might recall the classic card game ‘Beggar My Neighbour’ – that one where you think you’ve pinched all your opponent’s cards, only for them to slam down a Jack at the last minute, and suddenly all the initiative’s with them. It’s a bit like that…)

So what you get is a chunk of fun footy action that you can take wherever you go; child v friend, or child v Uncle Mo, or Uncle Mo v Auntie Becca once the kids have gone to bed.

Basically, like the sport itself without the outrageous diving, wall-to-wall gambling ads or questionable VAR. And considerably cheaper than a match ticket itself.

You’ll find Flip Football at a pocket-money price in toy stores and online (here at Amazon, for instance). All together now: GOOOAAAALLLL!!!!
